FAQ

  • What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

Direct Primary Care is a membership-based healthcare model where you pay a flat monthly fee—usually less than your phone bill. This includes in-person visits, virtual care, and ongoing management without the need for insurance, billing codes, or copays. Did we mention that as long as we’re open, we don’t limit these either?

  • Where are you located?

Northwest Direct Primary Care & Headache will be located at 1403 S Grand Blvd, Suite 201S in Spokane, Washington, and proudly serves patients throughout Eastern Washington.

  • Do I need insurance to join?

Technically, no. We don’t bill insurance at all. The only circumstance we use insurance is for expensive medications or imaging that you would prefer to have covered by insurance.

However, we do recommend that patients maintain some form of insurance for services that fall outside the scope of primary care—such as hospitalizations, surgery, specialist visits, or advanced imaging. Many of our patients opt for high-deductible insurance plans, which are often more affordable and can be paired with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). These accounts allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses—including your membership in some cases.

By combining a Northwest DPC membership with a high-deductible or catastrophic insurance plan, you may significantly reduce your total healthcare spending while gaining much faster, more personalized access to your physician for everyday care.

  • Can I message my doctor directly?

Yes, members can message Dr. Stewart directly during business hours. After-hours messages will be answered the next business day.

  • Do you offer after-hours care?

Unfortunately, any urgent concerns after hours that cannot wait until the next business day should go to urgent care or the Emergency Room (Chest pain, stroke-like symptoms, trauma). For things that can wait, members can message us and be seen within the next 1-2 business days for urgent care needs.

  • Can I Use Insurance?

We don’t bill insurance directly — and that’s by design.

Northwest DPC is a cash-for-service clinic, which means we work directly with you, not insurance companies. This allows us to offer transparent pricing, more personalized care, and complete control over your treatment — without third-party restrictions or surprise billing.

That said, you can still use your insurance in several helpful ways:

Reimbursement: If you're receiving headache care or one-time visits, we can provide you with a superbill (a detailed receipt with diagnostic and billing codes) that you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Medication coverage: We will send your prescriptions to your pharmacy and your pharmacy will bill them through your insurance. This is the usual route people are familiar with.

HSA/FSA payments: You can use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for both your DPC membership and headache-related services — giving you tax-advantaged access to care.

One of the biggest benefits of not billing insurance? Privacy. Your visits, diagnoses, and treatment plans stay between you and your doctor — not stored in a claims database or analyzed by insurance algorithms.

By removing insurance from the equation, we focus on what matters: your care, your time, and your comfort. No copays. No deductible hoops. No approvals. Just direct access and clear communication.

If you have Medicare, then we are required to bill Medicare. This means that if you have Medicare, our process will be identical to what you are used to. Unfortunately, this also means that the perks of the Direct Primary Care model will not be as robust, it will be more like seeing a traditional clinic. This is due to Medicare requirements and laws.

  • Can I cancel my membership at anytime?

Yes. We offer a month-to-month membership with no long-term contracts. If you need to pause or cancel, just let us know with 30 days' notice. If you ever want to rejoin, we will welcome you with open arms.

Of note, rejoining will result in a enrollment fee.
There enrollment fee is waived for the first time enrolling.

  • How is DPC different from concierge medicine?

Concierge practices typically bill insurance and charge an extra fee for access. The fees associated are typically much higher than DPC.

Direct to Primary Care eliminates insurance billing altogether.

Our pricing is transparent, affordable, and rooted in direct care — not layered costs.

Starting January 2026, patients are also able to use their HSA funds to pay for DPC care.

We hope this model can provide good care to many walks of life.

  • Do you see children?

Unfortunately, Internal Medicine physicians are only trained in diagnosing and treating adults.
